Hazelnut

A shrub dating back to prehistoric times, the hazelnut spread across Europe after the last ice age and has never stopped being cultivated since. Italy, and Sicily in particular, is today one of the world's main producers thanks to the high quality varieties cultivated on the Nebrodi in the territories between Castell'Umberto, Tortorici and Ucria, where a production of around 12,000 hectares of hazelnuts of the Curcia, Carrello, Ghiaria and Minnulare cultivars is concentrated, making Sicily the leading Italian region in the production of this extraordinary fruit, which is harvested as soon as it reaches full ripeness, between September and October.
Since at least 1600, the hazelnut has been a source of wealth for the Nebrodi territory, an uncontaminated and protected habitat, rich in biodiversity and characterised by a unique microclimate that give the 'nucidda' its organoleptic qualities rich in selenium, potassium, omega 3 and 6 and vitamin E, its sweet flavour and the intensity of its scent that distinguish it from other Italian and foreign varieties. An incredible fruit, Sicilian hazelnuts are prized for their balance of aroma, fragrance and texture, which can be found intact in many original sweet and savoury preparations, such as hazelnut almond pastries, croccanti, torroni and chiccosi, irresistible temptations for the palate.
